Which colored diamonds are the most expensive?

The most expensive colored diamonds are the ones that are the rarest. The rarest colored diamonds include red diamonds (rarest of them all with less than 20 natural red diamonds in existence today), pink, green and blue diamonds. Of course, there are three other factors that together with color determine the price of a given diamond, namely cut, clarity and carat, but throughout this article I will mainly focus on color.

The largest price paid for diamond was $9.49 million, for a pink diamond weighing 7.03 carats. Australia is the origin for the majority of the world’s pink and red diamonds. Pink and red natural diamonds are so rare that only a handful of jewelers actually have the chance to look at these wonderful stones.

Famous red diamond Moussaieff Red, weighing 5.11 carats achieved the incredible price of $8 million, more than $1.5 million per carat. Another very expensive red diamond was Hancock Red, weighing just 0.95 carats but was still achieving a huge price of $880,000 in 1987.

Natural blue diamonds are also very expensive - fancy vivid blue diamond weighing 6.04 carats achieved $7.9 million, at the auction in Hong Kong in October 2007. In average, blue diamond engagement rings cost in average 10 to 50 times more than white diamond engagement rings.

Other colored diamonds can also achieve huge prices, vivid yellow diamonds, for instance, can cost more than $50.000 per carat. Vivid orange diamonds also achieve huge prices – for instance 8.93 carat Fancy Intense Orange diamond achieved $1.9 million at Sotheby, while 5.54 carat Pumpkin Diamond achieved the price of $1.3 million.

The thing that you also need to know is that these high astronomical prices refer only to diamonds created in nature, meaning that colored diamonds produced in lab have significantly smaller price tags.

Australia – Home of the pink diamonds

Pink diamonds belong to the rarest colored diamonds in the world, with only red and green being above them in terms of rarity. This is of course the main reason why these diamonds achieve staggering prices and are always in demand.

Australia can really be called a home for the pink diamonds. Argyle diamond mine, located in East Kimberley region, Australia, is rightly dubbed „pink diamond mine“ because it is by far the world's largest source of pink diamonds, accounting for more than 90% of the global pink diamond supply.

How rare are pink diamonds? Well, pink diamonds account for only 3 out of 10,000 diamonds harvested in the world. Finding large pink diamonds is extremely rare event as less than ten pink diamonds larger than a carat are being extracted every year.

Not all famous pink diamonds were discovered in Australia. A large pink diamond called Steinmetz pink weighing 59.60 carats was discovered in the diamond mines in South Africa. The largest and the most famous pink diamond in the world is Darya-I-Nur, weighing astonishing 182 carats and currently being used as the priceless part of the Iranian Crown Jewels.

Majority of large pink diamonds found in Australia were exported to other countries but this wasn't the case with the „Argyle Pink“,  a diamond weighing just over eight carats, that was recently mined in Argyle mine.

Argyle Pink is reportedly the largest pink diamond in the country, and won't be moved abroad because the master cutters have decided it cannot be effectively cut to take advantage of its size, and will instead be used to maintain its original size of eight carats and allow the public to enjoy it.

Which colored diamonds are the best?

White diamonds are traditional and still the most popular option when it comes to choosing color for your diamond jewelry. On the other hand, colored diamonds seem to be more popular than ever before, because there are many people who want to step outside traditional limits and go for something different, something that best represents their style and personality.

The major problem with colored diamonds is that many of them are very rare, and therefore extremely expensive, meaning you'll have to give a real fortune to obtain them. Red, green, pink, and blue diamonds are all connected with huge prices and only the richest people can afford these diamonds.

This however refers only to natural colored diamonds. Today it is possible to purchase synthetic (lab created) diamonds in every color, and these diamonds have exactly the same properties like their natural brothers, with the only difference between them being the place of their origin, laboratory as opposed to Earth's core.

Some diamonds have also been treated with different chemical methods to change their colors. These diamonds are usually referred to as enhanced or treated diamonds. Lab created diamonds and enhanced diamond cost significantly less than natural colored diamonds so many people choose them instead. Brown and yellow diamonds are the most common colored diamonds.

Brown diamonds are sometimes referred to as champagne diamonds. Yellow diamonds have been recently growing in popularity because there have been large number of celebrities spotted swearing them, like for instance Halle Berry.

Even black diamonds are growing in popularity these days. Black diamond rings, for instance, have become very popular jewelry items among men. Black diamonds do not shine but compensate for this with strong mysticism and symbolism, and they truly make a unique fashion statement.

If you want to learn lot more about colored diamonds make sure to read this comprehensive article.

Black diamonds – A good choice for engagement rings?

The classical white diamonds are the most common choice when it comes to choosing the right diamond engagement ring. Some people however are not attracted by classical and traditional and choose other colors for their diamond engagement rings, even the black diamonds.

Black diamond engagement rings are extremely rare choice not only because they represent very unconventional choice but also because black diamonds are not that common in nature.

Black color of these diamonds is the result of certain inclusions just like this is the case with other colored diamonds. These inclusions give dark hue to black diamonds and some black diamonds are darker than others.

When it comes to grading black diamonds there are certain things you must know. First of all, black diamonds are unlike classical white diamonds valued more for having a greater degree of coloration. White diamonds, on the other hand, are valued more for having fewer inclusions.

The most expensive black diamonds are large diamonds with darker coloration. These diamonds can achieve very high prices.

If you like to show your unique style then black diamonds might just be the thing for you, representing unconventional choice and adding somewhat „wild touch“to your diamond engagement ring.

In most cases black diamonds will be less expensive compared to white diamonds so if you decide to go for black diamonds you'll not only have uniqueness but also lower price tag.

Are yellow diamonds expensive?

Yellow diamonds are still not among the most popular colored diamonds though their popularity has increased significantly in the last ten years. Together with brown diamonds yellow diamonds are the most common colored diamonds, so they are usually lot cheaper version of colored diamonds when compared with pink, red, green and blue diamonds.

However, yellow diamonds can also cost a lot, especially yellow diamonds with intensive and vivid yellow color. The more vivid yellow color the more will diamond cost, and there have been examples where certain yellow diamonds achieved price of more than $50,000 per carat.

Most yellow diamonds originate from South Africa and Australia (Argyle mine). South Africa is also a home to the world's most famous yellow diamond - Kimberley Octahedron, which in its original rough state weighed astonishing 287.42 carats.

Yellow diamonds are becoming increasingly popular among many celebrities because they offer brand new trend compared to playing it safe and just sticking with traditional "white diamonds". Heidi Klum, for instance, has been spotted several times wearing gorgeous yellow diamond. Katie Holmes was also spotted wearing gorgeous looking engagement ring with intensely colored yellow diamond.

The intensely colored yellow diamonds are expensive because they are extremely rare. Less than one percent of all yellow diamonds found in mines have intensive yellow color. Luckily, in recent times, you can always look for lab created yellow diamonds as an interesting, and also less expensive, alternative to natural colored yellow diamonds.

The yellow color of the diamond is a result of the certain amount of nitrogen in the crystal. Yellow diamonds are also interesting because unlike white diamonds are graded face up while white diamonds are graded face down.

Why are some diamonds colored and others not?

What gives colored diamonds their color and why are many colored diamonds so rare to found in nature? The answer can be found by examining diamond's chemical structure. The colored diamonds can thank their color either to corruption from other elements than carbon or deformation of the carbon atoms.

This basically means that colored diamonds have certain flaws and impurities in form of elements other than carbon. The number of these elements is however limited and includes the following elements: Nitrogen, Boron, Phosphorus, Hydrogen, Nickel, Cobalt, Silicon, and Sulfur.

Blue diamonds are very rarely found in nature and their blue color is the result of boron atoms found in the diamond lattice.

Even rarer colored diamonds are red and pink diamonds. The researchers believe that their color isn't the result of presence of some other element but is caused by a specific deformation of carbon atoms structure caused by change of electrons that somehow occurs in a process of traveling through mantle to earth's surface.

Green colored diamonds are usually the result of exposure to radiation. Since the radiation affects only superficial particles green diamonds are very demanding for polishing because one has to be very careful not to remove its color.

Black diamonds are becoming increasingly popular these days. Their black color is the result of the presence of graphite and iron, or to be more precise clusters of graphite and iron that have found their way in diamond's lattice.

Brown and yellow diamonds are the most common colored diamonds found in nature. Their color is caused by the presence of nitrogen atoms in the lattice.

Scientific and technological advances have also lead to creation of colored diamonds in the laboratories and today there are several different methods used to artificially create colored diamonds. These diamonds have exactly the same properties like natural colored diamonds but come with significantly lower price tag.

Vivid yellow diamonds are always in demand

Yellow diamonds can also cost lot of money just like other fancy colored diamonds. Of course, this mostly refers to vivid yellow colored diamonds which are very rare and therefore very expensive.

So how much do vivid yellow diamonds cost? The last big vivid yellow diamond was sold couple of days ago for staggering $6.6M at Christie's Sale of Magnificent Jewels. This is just another proof that there is always a high demand for fancy colored diamonds.

This magnificent pear-shaped yellow diamond weigh 32,77 carats, VS2, and achieved a price of $201,000 per carat. It was bought by an anonymous buyer.

The yellow diamonds got their color due to impurities in form of nitrogen. If we scale colored diamonds by the rarity then yellow diamonds are followed by brown, colorless, then by blue, green, black, pink, orange, purple, and red diamonds are the rarest.

The color of vivid yellow diamonds is incredible, it's literally blazing with yellow hues. Finding such diamond in nature is extremely difficult because this is an extremely rare geological phenomenon.

Yellow diamonds are becoming increasingly popular. Yellow diamonds are becoming hot trend among celebrities, for instance Paris Hilton and Heidi Klum were among celebs spotted wearing gorgeous looking yellow diamonds.

The largest yellow diamond ever found was The Kimberly Octahedron that was discovered in the Dutoitspan Mine in South Africa in 1964. It is the 14th largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered by weighing 616 carats.

Which colored diamonds are the rarest?

Colored natural diamonds such as red, green, blue pink and purple are so rare that many jewelers don't get the chance to see one of these diamonds throughout their entire lifetime. The rarest of all colored diamonds are red diamonds. How rare are red diamonds? Well, the fact that there are less than 20 red diamonds in existence today certainly says enough about rarity of these diamonds. The largest natural red diamond ever discovered was Moussaieff Red that weighs 5.11 carats. Hancock red is another famous red diamond weighing 0,95 carats.

The second rarest diamonds are green diamonds. There is only one famous green diamond, the majestic Dresden Green diamond that weighs 41 carats. The green color is usually the result of atomic radiation though in some cases it can also be a result of (over)exposure to hydrogen.

Purple, pink and orange diamonds are also very rare. The largest pink diamond of all time is Darya-I-Nur (meaning "Sea of light") weighing 182 carats. Most pink diamonds come from Argyle diamond mine in Australia. Most orange diamonds come from South Africa while most natural purple diamonds are modified by pink color.

Blue diamonds are also very rare though not as rare as the before mentioned colors. The most famous blue diamond in the world is the legendary "Blue Hope", and the biggest blue diamond in the world is Regent weighing 140.50 carats.

The least rare among natural colored diamonds are yellow and orange diamonds. Since they are the least rare they are usually the least expensive among colored diamonds though certain examples with very vivid hues can also achieve astronomical prices.

It also has to be said that many diamonds are being treated to change their colors (enhanced diamonds). The mostly used color treatment method is High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT). The colored diamonds that were treated usually cost significantly less compared to colored diamonds that weren't treated so make sure not to check the diamond certificate before buying certain piece of diamond jewelry.

How to examine and evaluate diamond's color?

Color is one of the four key factors that influence the final price of the diamond, together with cut, clarity, and carat. Though to many this may seem like very easy thing to do, examining diamond color is very difficult, and it more often than not requires professional knowledge and skill. Here is how the professionals usually do this.

First of all make sure to examine the color of diamond under the normal lightning. Professionals usually use fluorescent bulbs that produce neutral-light color, because if diamond color is examined under warmer or colder light the results can often look quite opposite, warmer light usually gives diamond red and yellow hues, while colder light gives diamond blue hues.

Together with light under which diamond color is examined there is also one other factor almost equally important, namely our eyes. Our eyes are extremely sensitive and so in order for our eyes to do the most objective work we must give them some time to get use to the light in the stone's surface. When examining color it is also important that we are not feeling tired or sleepy because this can sometimes significantly affect the outcome, even mood is important factor because certain tests have showed that being in bad mood can neutralize the influence of bright colors in the examination area.

When professional gemologist examines the diamond he places it with the table's faced down with the angle of sight parallel to the rondist and vertical to the pavilion. When examining diamond gemologist pays special attention to the amount of color and the saturation scale in the diamond. Gemologists must also pay attention to any possible flaws when determining the color because flaws can cause a different shade to the diamond, therefore causing erroneous color reading.

Examining diamond color usually needs several different tests. It also has to be said that GIA created a standard diamond color guideline under which the color of each diamond is compared to a pre-selected set of control stones.

The final step in color evaluation is giving a letter grade to the diamond. Letter grade system starts at the letter D and goes to Z with a color for each letter. The lettered list is as follows.
- D-E-F: colorless
- G-H-I-J: nearly colorless
- K-L-M: slightly colored, often yellow
- N-O-P-Q-R: somewhat colored, often yellow
- S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z: colored, usually yellow, and sometimes brown.

Diamond properties - How important is the color?

Diamond color, despite being one of the most important properties of a diamond is not the only factor used to determine the final value of a certain diamond. There are other important properties too such as carat (weight of diamond), cut, and clarity which all have their say in determining the actual price of a certain diamond.

Some diamond colors are rarer compared to other, and rarer means more expensive though diamond occur in variety of colors. Virtually diamond can be of every color of the rainbow.

Diamond color is the result of impurities or structural defects that cause the coloration, which means that diamonds without imperfection are colorless.

Red diamonds are considered to be rarest of them all, and the list of extremely rare diamonds also includes pink, green and blue diamonds.

Yellow and brown diamonds are usually two the most common diamond colors.

The more vivid and intense color is usually accompanied with higher price tag compared to less vivid colored diamonds.

White diamonds are also referred to as colorless diamonds, though this is not exactly true since most of them have pale yellow or brown color that is termed the normal color range.

Normal color range for diamonds ranges from D which is totally colorless to Z which is a pale yellow or brown color.

Colored diamond facts

Though white diamonds are considered to be everlasting classic this doesn't mean that colored diamonds are not as beautiful, or even more beautiful than their white brothers. Through this article I will tell you many interesting facts about colored diamonds, and I'll start the story with the blue diamonds.

Facts about blue diamonds

Natural blue diamonds are extremely rare, and therefore extremely expensive. Most blue diamonds that can be found in the different jewelry stores aren't naturally blue but have been artificially treated to bring out a blue color. Blue diamonds always have high demand because blue is one of the most popular colors of the diamonds, so sometimes it is even difficult to find treated blue diamonds, whether alone the natural blue diamonds.

When it comes down to blue color, it has to be said that the most desirable are sky-blue diamonds, while least popular of all blue diamonds are greenish-blue diamonds. The color is not the only factor that will determine the price of the blue diamond because other members of 4C's will also play their role, namely the cut, carat, and clarity, and in most cases really beautiful blue stones will cost you a real fortune.

Basically, if blue is your desired color for diamond then you have to be prepared to spend big, especially if you're on a lookout for natural blue diamond because natural blue diamonds are extremely rare. In diamond business extremely rare equals to extremely expensive. When it comes to price of a natural blue diamonds then prepare yourself to spend a real fortune because (natural) blue diamond engagement rings cost in average 10 to 50 times more than their white counterparts. It is also very difficult to find natural blue diamond because they are always in high demand. Therefore it is really no surprise that many people choose sapphires as the acceptable alternative to very rare, and very expensive blue diamonds.

Perhaps blue is so popular color because arguably the most famous diamond in the world, the legendary "Blue Hope", has blue color. The beautiful "Blue Hope" diamond is believed to be cursed because certain people that possessed this precious stone throughout the history have had more than fair share of bad luck. If you want to see how this legendary diamond looks like you can currently find it at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. The biggest among the most famous blue diamonds is Regent that weighs 140.50. Among the most prominent people that possessed this diamond were Napoleon and Louis XV. This gorgeous blue diamond now has its residence in Louvre where people can admire its stunning beauty.

Another famous blue diamond is definitely Queen of Holland. This is yet another big blue diamond weighing 135.92-carat. Queen of Holland diamond got its name after Queen Wilhelmina, Dutch queen who reigned from 1890 to 1948. It also has to said that there is an argue between some experts whether Queen of Holland should be included among blue diamonds, and some even suggest that it would be better to include it among white diamonds by claiming this is white diamond that possess a definite blue tint.

Sultan of Morocco is yet another famous blue diamond. It is not as big as Regent or Queen of Holland since it weighs only 35.27 carats but is still the fourth largest blue diamond in the world, just behind Hope diamond. Current state of this diamond is relatively unknown after it was sold to a private American collector back in 1972.

The last diamond I will mention among the most famous blue diamond is the Blue Heart diamond that is also known under the name of "Eugénie Blue" though there are no clear evidences that it was actually owned by the empress. At this date Blue Heart diamond also belongs to very impressive Smithsonian collection.

Some other famous blue diamonds include Wittelsbach, Transvaal Blue, and Blue Empress.

Facts about red diamonds

Fancy colored diamonds are not only extremely popular but also extremely expensive, and among the most expensive colored diamonds are certainly red diamonds, which are the rarest of all other colored diamonds. In fact, natural red diamonds are so rare that 99% of jewelers in the world have never had the pleasure to see these gorgeous stones.

In fact, there are less than 20 natural red diamonds in existence today, meaning that buying these diamonds is not only extremely expensive but also extremely difficult because of their rarity.

How expensive are red diamonds? I will give you one very interesting example by using a famous red diamond called the Moussaieff Red which is the largest red diamond graded by GIA. Moussaieff Red's weight was "only" 5,11 carats, I say only because this diamond was sold for an unbelievable $8 million, more than $1,5 million per carat. The Moussaieff Red was displayed as part of the Smithsonian's "The Splendor of Diamonds" exhibit

Even the people who can accept and afford such high price tags will find it difficult to buy one of the 20 remaining red diamonds, because most of these diamonds are in hand of private jewelers or in museums, and it's hard to find any private jeweler who's ready to make part with his most prized asset.

Most of the natural red diamonds were found in the Argyle mine in Australia, and few were discovered in Africa.

Among other famous red diamonds I should also mention the red diamond called Hancock Red" that has weight of only 0,95 carats but was still sold for an huge price of $880,000 at Christie's New York in April, 1987.

Because of limited numbers of red diamonds many people turn to enhanced red diamonds as an alternative, and some turn to rubies as another acceptable alternative.

Facts about green diamonds

Natural green diamonds are second rarest colored diamonds, just behind red diamonds that are the rarest.

Green color of these diamonds is the result of atomic radiation that affects the diamond's crystal structure.

There are only few "totally green" diamonds as most of green diamonds are only green in patches or on the surface of the crystal.

It is possible to create green diamond in the lab by bombarding diamond by beta and gamma rays at certain temperatures in order to create green coloration.

The largest and the most famous natural green diamond is Dresden Green. This diamond weighs 41 carats. The Dresden Green diamond got its name from the capitol of Saxony where it has been on display for more than 200 years.

Cutting green diamond is very difficult because faceting a diamond that is only green on the surface just cuts off the green color.

Sometimes, though this is not common, green color (or to be more precise grayish-green) of the diamond can be caused by hydrogen.

Heating the stone might sometimes improve the color of the diamonds but the temperature must always be below 600°C if we want to improve green color of the diamond, because at this temperature the green color is likely to turn to a light yellow or brown.

Bombardment by beta and gamma rays as well as neutrons will color the stone to a greater depth of green color and in some cases even turn the whole stone's interior green (this can be done in lab).

Facts about pink diamonds

Pink diamonds are one of the most desirable colored diamonds, and also one of the rarest colored diamonds.

Very few jewelry stores have pink diamonds available for you to buy, and finding one can sometimes be a real art.

Pink diamonds because of their popularity and high demand are also among the most expensive colored diamonds so don't go for them unless you're really prepared to splash the cash.

The biggest source of pink diamonds is Australian Argyle Diamond Mine that produces almost 90% of total pink diamonds in the world.

Two most famous pink diamonds in the world are Darya-I-Nur and Steinmetz Pink. Darya-I-Nur (meaning "Sea of light") is the largest pink diamond of all time weighing an estimated 182 carats (36 g). It has very rare pale pink color and is currently the priceless part of the Iranian Crown Jewels. Some diamond experts believe that Darya-I-Nur was originally part of the much bigger pink diamond but this still hasn't been proved.Steinmetz pink is also very unique pink diamond. This beautiful pink stone has weight of 59.60 carats (11.92 g) and has very rare vivid pink color, and is the largest known diamond having been rated Vivid Pink by GIA. Steinmetz pink was unveiled in Monaco on May 29, 2003, in a public ceremony, and was discovered in the South Africa. The fact that team of eight professional jewelers took 20 months to create this beautiful pink diamond tells you how special this diamond really is.

Facts about black diamonds

Black diamonds are recently becoming very fashionable pieces of jewelry that often cost significantly less than their white counterparts.

Natural black diamonds are very rarely found in nature, meaning that majority of black diamonds in the market are treated black diamonds.

Among most popular pieces of black diamond jewelry are black diamond rings and black diamond bracelets.

Hip hop and rap scene have made black diamond rings very popular among men.

Black diamonds do not shine like white diamonds do but they do have some other advantages that make them appealing, most notably strong mysticism and symbolism.

Lately, there has been increased demand for high quality black diamonds because many celebrities find them to be "very cool".

Artificially treated black diamonds when closely looked at often look more like dark green diamonds than black diamonds.

In India, traditional diamond country black diamonds symbolize the snake's eyes, the symbol that was used for many sacred statues.

Many jewelers consider black diamonds as the least attractive of all colored diamonds, mostly because their lack of luster.

Many diamond experts believe that investing in black diamonds is not a wise thing because this is very likely short-lived fashion.

Much of black diamonds available on market are actually more gray or dark gray rather than black because totally black diamonds are extremely rare.

Some latest studies have shown that black diamonds formed in stellar supernovae explosions. It is also possible that these black diamonds were once the size of asteroids before they landed on Earth.

Facts about yellow diamonds

Up to recently yellow diamonds were not popular choice like some other colored diamonds but lately many celebrities have opted for yellow diamonds which has significantly increases popularity of these colored diamonds.

Intensely colored yellow diamonds are pretty expensive and much sough after unlike faintly colored yellow diamonds that are less expensive and less wanted merchandise.

The largest number of yellow diamonds were found in South Africa, including some very famous diamonds such as "Kimberley Octahedron", that weighed 616 carats in its original rough state.

Among other places in the world, the Australian Argyle mine is also know for its fair share of yellow diamonds.

Intensely colored yellow diamonds are very expensive so many people in the end opt for alternatives in form of topaz or yellow sapphires.

Tiffany Diamond is one of the famous yellow diamonds that in its original state weighed 287.42, and was also found in South Africa like Kimberley Octahedron.

Yellow diamond that has color graded beyond the Z category in a white diamond grading scale is automatically classified as fancy colored.

One carat yellow diamond with a good cut and clarity can cost more than $50,000, meaning they can be sometimes much more expensive than white diamonds.

Yellow diamonds are graded face up while white diamonds are graded face down.

Facts about orange diamonds

Natural orange diamonds are very rare, and therefore very expensive, and the most expensive natural orange diamonds are the ones blessed with the intense and vivid orange color.

Most natural orange diamonds that can be found at global diamond market have their origin from South Africa and Australia.

Most orange diamonds available at the market have hues, and finding natural orange diamond with pure orange color isn't easy because demand for such diamonds is large, even despite the huge price tag.

Pure orange diamonds are usually sold at extremely high prices. For instance, 8.93 carat Fancy Intense Orange diamond was sold at Sotheby's for $1.9 million, while 5.54 carat Pumpkin Diamond was sold for $1.3 million.

Orange diamonds, as well as other fancy colored diamonds are becoming increasingly popular among celebrities. Halle Berry, for instance, prefers orange diamonds.

Orange diamonds can be also artificially produced in lab, these diamonds do not have such high price tag like natural orange diamonds do but they often have properties even better than their natural brothers.

Fancy intense orange diamond add special fashion statement for person wearing them. Unlike classic white diamonds orange diamonds add more courageous statement, showing high confidence and self belief of their proud owners.

Facts about brown diamonds

Brown diamonds are also often referred to as "champagne" diamonds, which gives them more exotic and desirable appeal than the ordinary name brown. Brown diamonds are usually less expensive than other fancy colored diamonds, but brown diamonds with lighter and darker shades are not that cheap as many people think, and are quite attractive, especially when combined with white diamonds.

Though brown isn't that popular diamond color as many other colors are, brown diamonds are becoming more popular than ever before following the current colored diamonds trend. Brown diamonds are most popular when in combination with white diamonds and fancy colored diamonds where its difference offers great beauty to entire combination.

Argyle diamond mine in Australia is producing a significant quantity of brown diamonds, and they are responsible for coining their more appealing names such as "champagne diamonds" and "cognac" diamonds. Color of these diamonds in divided can be in range from very light brown to dark brown and there is special scale devised in Argyle diamond mine (C1 to C7 grading scale) which separates the tone or depth of color progressively.

Among famous brown diamond special place belongs to the Golden Jubilee, dark rich champagne diamond, which is the world’s largest cut natural diamond weighing 545 carats, that was offered to the King of Thailand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ascension to the throne. It took full three years to complete its polishing.

Though brown diamonds are still not popular as some other fancy colored diamonds their popularity grows, especially of dark brown ("cognac") diamonds. However they are still mostly used in different combinations with white and other colored diamonds than only brown combinations. And being usually less expensive than other fancy colored diamonds these diamonds are definitely worth to consider.
