Diamond clarity definition

Diamond clarity refers to diamond’s visual appearance characterized primarily by the number of inclusions and their visibility. Clarity is together with cut, color and carat, one of the four main factors that determine the actual value of diamond.

Inclusions play the major role in determining the clarity of certain diamond, fewer inclusions mean more shine and better clarity. Most diamonds have some minor inclusions, and only a small number of mined diamonds is graded as flawless.

Under the GIA clarity grading system the best diamond are categorized as flawless (gemstones with no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10 x magnifications). Diamonds with obvious inclusions on the other hand belong to the so called „included“category.

Since many diamonds come with inclusions and other imperfections jewelers have been forced to find the way to artificially enhance the clarity of diamonds with the processes such  as microscopic laser drilling and feathering.

It also has to be said that diamond clarity is often dependent upon the stone’s cut because some inclusions are more noticeable under the specific diamond cut.

Since many diamonds lack adequate clarity to be used as gemstones they find its use for different industrial purposes, because of their supreme physical properties such as hardness.

Most diamond buyers will be happy with diamond's clarity as long as inclusions aren't visible under the naked eye. This is because diamonds categorized as flawless cost a lot of money.
