Diamonds in United States - Crater of Diamonds, Arkansas
Diamonds are very popular among Americans and Uncle Sam is the world's largest diamond consumer, but when it comes to diamond production there's only one active diamond mine in USA and this is Crater of Diamonds in Pike County, Arkansas.
This isn't the usual diamond mine as collectors pay a small fee of a few dollars per day to dig and can keep any diamonds they find making it only diamond mine in the world that is open to the public. The largest diamond ever found in this mine was "Uncle Sam" diamond with size of 40,23 carats.
Since the beginning of 2011, people discovered 96 diamonds in Crater of Diamonds, most of them being smaller than one carat. However, in March four diamonds over one carat in size were found in this mine, and the latest discovered diamond was a 2.44-carat silver white diamond found by Melissa and Kenny Oliver who decided to name the diamond the "Silver Moon Diamond", because of its silvery-white color.
According to first examinations the "Silver Moon Diamond“appears to be flawless and couple intends to keep the diamond.
As already said before the Crater of Diamonds in Arkansas is the only active diamond mine in United States. However there's still a huge potential for diamond mining in USA, especially in Alaska that can be easily compared with latest Canadian diamond discoveries. There's also Wyoming that is according to some experts filled with kimberlite pipes and if this is correct (many diamond pipes have been already discovered) USA could jump into diamond production bandwagon at a completely new level. But for now it's only Crater of Diamonds.
