Diamond cut/cutting - Quick facts

Cut is one of the four most important factors that determine the final price of a diamond. The other three include color, clarity and carat.

Difference in price between poorly cut diamond and expertly cut diamond can sometimes be extremely big, even more than 50 percent.

Master diamond cutters are extremely well paid, and are much sought after worldwide. However, diamond cutting skill requires lot of experience and can't be learned in short time period.

Diamond cut is not the same as diamond shape, though there are still many people who think these two are the same thing, though in most cases diamond cut is decided by the diamond's original shape (the outline of the diamond's edge).

The most popular diamond cut is brilliant cut, brilliant cut has many facets which gives diamond maximum sparkle (usually full brilliant cut has 58 facets).

Diamond cut is really the final touch that adds a special beauty to a certain diamond.

The quality of diamond cut is determined by several different factors such as final proportions of the stone, the amount of sparkle, the amount of fire (flare of rainbow colors from within), etc.

Single-cut diamonds have 17 facets while Swiss-cut diamonds have 33 facets.

The more facets the diamond has the more expensive the cutting is.

Custom design cuts include diamonds with even more than 58 facets.
