Yellow diamonds are still not among the most popular colored diamonds though their popularity has increased significantly in the last ten years. Together with brown diamonds yellow diamonds are the most common colored diamonds, so they are usually lot cheaper version of colored diamonds when compared with pink, red, green and blue diamonds.
However, yellow diamonds can also cost a lot, especially yellow diamonds with intensive and vivid yellow color. The more vivid yellow color the more will diamond cost, and there have been examples where certain yellow diamonds achieved price of more than $50,000 per carat.
Most yellow diamonds originate from South Africa and Australia (Argyle mine). South Africa is also a home to the world's most famous yellow diamond - Kimberley Octahedron, which in its original rough state weighed astonishing 287.42 carats.
Yellow diamonds are becoming increasingly popular among many celebrities because they offer brand new trend compared to playing it safe and just sticking with traditional "white diamonds". Heidi Klum, for instance, has been spotted several times wearing gorgeous yellow diamond. Katie Holmes was also spotted wearing gorgeous looking engagement ring with intensely colored yellow diamond.
The intensely colored yellow diamonds are expensive because they are extremely rare. Less than one percent of all yellow diamonds found in mines have intensive yellow color. Luckily, in recent times, you can always look for lab created yellow diamonds as an interesting, and also less expensive, alternative to natural colored yellow diamonds.
The yellow color of the diamond is a result of the certain amount of nitrogen in the crystal. Yellow diamonds are also interesting because unlike white diamonds are graded face up while white diamonds are graded face down.
